Advanced English

At this level, the focus is on extending range, fluency and accuracy, on learners becoming conscious of their own errors and weaknesses, and on moving from Knowledge and Understanding of language to Interpretation, Response and Analysis.

Levels below C1 focus on learning the language, or study of English. Levels C1 and above begin looking at how the language works, and study in English.

Our Advanced English (C1, C2, E2L; E1L and ELIt) programmes are built around coaching and ongoing support and include literary English, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes, Business and Executive English. We also offer single-topic Practice & Feedback sessions and examination preparation.

Format

Sessions are based on an audio, visual or written prompt which develops comprehension and understanding ("reception") with an emphasis on improving and developing vocabulary, structures and usages.

Prior to each session, students produce a short piece of writing and the session which follows discusses the explicit and implicit meanings of the prompt, thereby developing "production" of both writing and speaking. Writing is critical for two reasons : it is the hardest of the language skills and as a result, needs and weaknesses, which might be masked in speech,  are evident.

Grammar, vocabulary and examination practice excersises are set according to the needs which emerge through the productive practice above. These, and the prompts, are sent by email as links or pdfs prior to each session.

Modalities

We offer one-to-one and small group sessions for advanced learners and speakers; we recommend a group maximum of four to allow for participation and our fees are hourly not per student. You many choose open (we choose who, what, where and when), on demand and closed (you choose who, what, where and when) sessions.

Sessions are currently offered through video conferencing, using Google Meet.

Programmes

We offer off-the-shelf, bespoke or tailormade, defined and casual options. A defined programme is more like a traditional course or project and often has a formal Agreement whch states the programme's "scope and sequence", dates and times, reports to be sent to managers, specific tests and assessments and so on.

A casual programme (or "as needed" or "pay as you go) include "conversation", problem clinics, guided discussions, reviewing essays and dissertations, coaching on methodology or assessment etc. Student needs are addressed as they come up during the session.

Fees

Fees depend on the programme chosen, and are payable by transfer in advance. We offer discounts to schools and to teachers. We do not have materials or coursebook expenses; we send you what you need for programmes as a pdf or link.

We have a "no cancellation" and no refund policy; classes may be re-scheduled with six hours' notice, or less if that slot can be filled by another student. Click here for our General Terms.

Professional Conversations

Maintain, develop and extend your English with our professional conversations which can be adapted to include an English level maintenance and development focus. We especially recommend these and our literature programmes for those who want to maintain or develop spoken range, fluency and accuracy.

  3. I apologise for not replying earlier, the site did not tell me I had comments however I have now turned on that feature. Firstly you need to know your current level, and your strenghts and weaknesses. Then you can choose a programme based on those. For example, you may be C1 Speaking, B2 Reading and B1 Writing so a general course would not be the best. In most cases, I recommend a private specialist tutor who can design a programme based on your goals, profile and realities. Please let me know if I can help.

  4. Hello, if I have a B2 level, is there any chance to reinforce my skills to reach the C1?

    1. Yes of course. You need to invest time and effort; how much depends on where you are; for example, a B2+ is closer to a C1 than a B1-. Secondly, levels are averages so you might be a B2+ in Speaking and a B1- in writing meaning you would need to put more time into one area than into another. Hit the "Contact us" link (top right above) if you'd like to discuss this further.

  5. My classes with Robert started by a recommendation that another English teacher gave me, because I couldn´t find what I needed. In him and his classes I found more than what I was expecting for, he not only prepared me for my IELTS with patience, but he also was very flexible and addressed my needs, regarding a person who was passing from a B2 level to a C1. That was the first time I didn´t have to do the typical grammatic exercises (which I knew too well)and in contrast, showed me those cultural elements in language that I wasn´t aware of, and that no one taught me before. He is very nice, respectful and gentle, so I actually had a lot of fun during his classes. And in the end, I reached my goal! (I had 7 points on my IELTS test) So it was a win win!
